Asylum
<\/strong><\/h1>\n

A person applying for the protection of a state is called asylum seeker, and it is a fundamental human right to seek asylum. Sweden has signed the UN Refugee Convention, which means, among other things, that Sweden should examine each person\u2019s application for asylum individually.<\/p>\n

What is required to obtain asylum in Sweden?<\/h4>\n

Asylum is equivalent to a residence permit granted to a foreigner who is a refugee or otherwise in need of protection. Refugees and others in need of protection are entitled to a residence permit, except in certain exceptional cases. You are deemed a refugee if you have well-founded reasons to be afraid of persecution because of race, nationality, religious and political opinion, or sexual orientation, or if you are persecuted because you belong to a certain community.<\/p>\n

A person may not be expelled to a country where he or she risks being persecuted, tortured or killed. The deemed refugee receives a declaration of refugee status based on both the United Nations Refugee Convention and EU rules.<\/p>\n

Subsidiary protection means you are at risk of being punished by death or subjected to bodily punishment, torture, other inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment or you are at serious risk of being injured due to armed conflict. Anyone who is deemed to need alternate or subsidiary protection may receive an alternative declaration of protection status based on EU rules.<\/p>\n
